Champ Car: Cristiano DaMatta Seriously Hurt

Get Well Shorty!
Da Matta Saved by Quick Response
Written by: Robin Miller Indianapolis, Ind. – 8/6/2006

Quick response and excellent treatment gave Cristiano da Matta every chance to survive his freakish accident last week at Elkhart Lake and, thankfully, the 2002 CART champion is going to live.

But how soon the 32-year-old Brazilian recovers from his severe head injury and to what extent is impossible to predict, according to Dr. Chris Pinderski and Dr. Steve Olvey.

"Everybody did a great job, from our safety team to the surgeon in Wisconsin (Randall Johnson) and Cristiano's conditions has stabilized so now he's in the recovery phase," said Pinderski, the medical director for Champ Car who intubated da Matta before he was placed in the helicopter for his emergency trip to Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, Wis.

"But now we've got him completely sedated and we're allowing the brain to reset itself so it's going to be several days before we know much more."

Da Matta was testing at Road America and running approximately 100 mph when a deer jumped into the path of his car and caromed into the cockpit. That contact created violent accelerations to the brain. It caused the brain to bleed and swell and required immediate surgery to alleviate the pressure.

"Cristiano suffered an acute subdural hematoma and if there had been any delay in getting him into surgery he probably wouldn't have made it," said Olvey, a critical care specialist and director of Neuro Science at the University of Miami, who along with Dr. Terry Trammell, revolutionized safety in auto racing during the 1980s and 1990s.

"The prognosis is much improved with surgery in four to six hours like he was able to receive."

It's a scenario similar to what happened to Roberto Guerrero in 1987. While tire testing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a suspension failure sent him into the second-turn wall and his right front tire came back and caught Guerrero in the head. Initially, the prognosis looked bleak.

"Roberto was in a coma for three weeks," said Olvey, whose radical steroid treatments were credited with reducing the swelling and saving the Colombian driver's life. "But when he finally woke up he recognized his wife and everybody else in his life. Two months later he was driving a passenger car and a month after that he was playing golf. Six months after his accident he almost won the CART race at Phoenix.

"Obviously, it was a remarkable recovery. All head injuries are different and right now it's just one of those wait and see situations.

"But it's not hopeless."

How To Trash A 1.5 Million Dollar Ferrari

Provo driver crashes his $1.3M Ferrari during road rally
By Mark Havnes and Lisa RosettaFrom
Salt Lake City Tribune
Posted: 4:57:51 PM- MILFORD - A Provo man touring the state in a $1.3 million Ferrari as part of the four-day Utah Fast Pass Road Rally - which involves the Utah Highway Patrol shutting down portions of roads so participants can "open up" their cars - was injured Wednesday morning when he crashed about 27 miles north of Milford.
Richard Losee was one of 30 drivers of exotic sport cars who paid $5,000 apiece to participate in the rally and was on a stretch of State Route 257 when he lost control of his car.
Lt. Doug McCleve, a UHP spokesman, said Losee was flown to Utah Valley Medical Center in Provo after the 10 a.m. accident and admitted with fractured bones.
The Utah Fast Pass Road Rally, organized by Larry Miller's Miller Motorsports Park for the Honoring Heroes Foundation, raises funds to help families of UHP troopers killed or injured in the line of duty.
The 2003 Enzo Ferrari, traveling at about 100 mph, was torn to pieces during the crash. After veering off the road, the car lost its transmission and V-12 engine and came to rest off the other side of the road.
McCleve noted the Italian sports car - for safety reasons - is designed
to come apart in a high-speed crash.

"The car did exactly what it was designed to do," McCleve said. "Just the chassis and passenger compartment remained."
UHP Lt. Douglas Rawlinson estimated the Ferrari to be worth $1.3 million.
The rally is designed to showcase 25 to 30 "super cars" such as Ferraris, Porches and Mercedes Benz, according to the Miller Motorsports Park Web site. The drive begins and ends at the sports park in Tooele and includes the UHP shutting down a 15-mile stretch of State Route 257, allowing the drivers to speed in their cars, said Trooper Jeff Nigbur.
The UHP clocked the drivers' speeds and gave them "speeding tickets," the "fines" from which go to charity.

Italy 2 France 0: Forza Italia...Again?

The French crowd was out in force to support their national team in its battle for the world title, facing no less passionate group of tifosi there to cheer their team for glory and national pride. It was close, the Italian team prevailed, and to the strains of the Italian national anthem the Italian team cheered on the German winner as he stood on the stand with his Spanish rival. Say What??? Forgot to mention it was the French Grand Prix at Magny Cours, and that there are two titles in dispute, a driver and a constructor championship. Runner-up Alonso drives for Renault with Michellin tires, and his German rival Schumacher drives for Scuderia Ferrari. While people from everywhere are Ferrari or a Renault fans, for Italians and the French it is a national contest, ditto German sentiment for BMW and Merecedes. In Maranello, Italy where Ferrari is based, Church bells ring when Ferrari wins, and Ferrari is a national obsession. Founder, Enzo Ferrari, sold his beautiful red cars to rich people, to support his relentless quest to be the best in auto racing, and Italians identify with that passion. Renault, not only represents speed, but to the French -with Michellin- it represents France's national industrial might and its storied automotive history. And this race in particular, was the 100th Anniversary of the first French Grand Prix, which gave it a sense of national urgency.

Pretty cool stuff.

Colombia: Comentarios Sobre Movida De Montoya a NASCAR

Mexico: 35 Years Pedro Rodriguez remembered

Today it is 35 years since one of Latin America's best drivers, Mexico's Pedro Rodriguez died at the wheel of a Ferrari 512M in an Interseries Race in Germany.

With his younger brother, Ricardo, the two known in Mexico as the chamacos (the Kids) began driving barely in their teens in the intensely competetive Southern California sportscar scene, and quickly caught the eye of Ferrari distributor Luigi Chinneti, who put them in quality rides that would lead to Europe. Their father was a mysterious figure, attached to more than one Mexican president, who starting out as a motorcycle stunt rider and trainer, became a major PEMEX contractor and owned several auto dealerships, while financing his sons racing careers.
Initially it was Ricardo who got most of the attention and was considered the more talented of the brothers. But Pedro showed plenty of pace and skill, and in one wild day in Havana drove the Cuban crowd to a frenzy as he gave a spirited chase to Stirling Moss - arguably the best driver in the world at the time, finishing second to him in the last Grand Prix of Havana. But it was Ricardo who got the Ferrari Formula 1 ride at age 19, holding records that just recently were broken for scoring points. But, sadly Ricardo died trying to get earn a front-row spot at his home track, at the tender age of 20, and Pedro was left to pick up the pieces.
And as the 1960's rolled on, he became one of the worlds best sportscar drivers - if not the best one at the peak of his powers. Driving Ferrari's and assorted other cars he won many of the top sports car races, including Le Mans and Daytona.
But, it was with the Porsche 917 - one of the most fabulous race cars of all time that he truly became a legend. A true racer, he famously banged wheels against teamate and rival, Seppi Siefert in Belgium, and fought tooth and nail against another sportscar legend, Mark Donahue on the high banked turns of Daytona in the 24 hour classic.
And while it took him a little longer, Pedro became a first-rate Formula One racer, winning his first race in South Africa and the second one in the legendary Spa circuit of Belgium.
It was two performances in the rain that truly cemented his legacy, the first dueling with Jacky Icyx Ferrari in Spa, and then in a downpour in Brand Hatch England, in a drive that veteran mostorposrts writers Eoin Young called the best he has ever seen.

Pedro would race anything on four wheels, even making some NASCAR starts. It was that willingness to race anything, that ultimately may have hastened his end. He went to Germany to drive a Ferrari in a relatively meaningless Interseries race.

From www.reforma.com

Joe Ramirez, Pedro's countryman and master Formula 1 mechanic and team manager, remembers his friend:

Nuevamente me encontré devastado.

Colombia Bombshell JPM To NASCAR

TOTAL SHOCK MOVE Speed note here

I do not know what to make of this, as one friend said "I don't know whether to laugh or to cry."
Juan Pablo Montoya has just announced that he is signing with Chip Ganassi racing to run the #42 Car in NASCAR. JPM with 7 Formula One wins is still a top line F1 driver and changing over to NASCAR full-time is kind of strange.

Let me just initially say that JPM will probably do very well in NASCAR. And I say that because drivers coming from a traditional US open wheel background - with a premium on car control - have done exceptionally well in recent years, including Gordon, Stewart Kasey Kahne, and Ryan Newman. While JPM did not come from that background, he did exceptionally well in CART's ovals where some of those skills applied.

Juan Pablo Montoya: How Could We Know That Promises End?

Brazilian motorsports writer, on Speedtv Cassio Cortes has an awesome article on Speedtv about Montoya's shock move, which expresses just about everything I want to say:

How Could We Know That Promises End?
Written by: Cassio Cortes, RACER Magazine Sao Paulo, Brazil – 7/11/2006

For sheer shock and awe value, Juan Pablo Montoya’s switch from Formula 1 to NASCAR was great news, in the classic journalistic sense: a secret kept better than Deep Throat’s identity, and an undeniably a coup for NASCAR and, to an extent, American racing. Today’s confirmation that he will no longer be racing for McLaren this season was hardly a surprise, as his new Ganassi deal made him the proverbial lame duck at the Woking squad.

I confess to having always had a soft spot in my heart for JPM. A South American from a mess-stricken but affable country, he burst onto the F1 scene as a CART-bred talent ready to take no prisoners. An Indy 500 win in a one-off as a rookie in 2000 was the icing on the cake of his brilliant U.S. career.

Devoid of a feisty latino since Ayrton Senna’s death in 1994, the pinnacle of motorsport was soon introduced to the Colombian’s fiery side - in only his third race as a Williams-BMW driver, matter-of-factly. It was April Fool’s Day, 2001, and an F1 world craving for a man with the huevos (not to mention the talent) to match up against one Michael Schumacher seemed to have found a new Messiah.

Mario Fuera De Forsythe

Unification????

This actually could be a reality, and I know I have said that tons of times before, here is the Autoweek story that broke this:

More than a decade after Tony George cut ties with CART and launched the Indy Racing League, after years of declining popularity and failed efforts to end the rift in Indy-style racing, all indicators suggest there is essential agreement to merge the IRL and Champ Car World Series for the 2007 season.

Turbos, and 50/50 ownership!

Points of agreement include 50/50 ownership of the merged series, which will be independent of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with George and Kalkhoven acting as co-chairmen. Both Honda (IRL) and Cosworth (Champ Car), with or without Ford badging, are in. Bridgestone is in as tire supplier, though it's not certain whether that would be with the Bridgestone or Firestone brand. There may already be agreement on more specific points, but those who know are unwilling to share that information for fear of scuttling the process or enflaming the sensitivities of self-interested parties in both camps before the deal is done.

Based on the current state of affairs, several other things are apparent. The more traditional 2.65-liter turbo V8 currently used in Champ Car seems the more likely choice, as opposed to the IRL's normally aspirated 3.5. Champ Car has a new chassis well into development with Panoz (one of the IRL's current suppliers), scheduled to debut in 2007.

Champ Car: Michel Jourdain a PKV`

Legge - Jourdain

Crucemos los dedos para que así suceda...
